Where Science Meets Spa

Where Science Meets Spa

Chris Henry looks at why visiting a spa has never been more popular and finds out if there is a home solution to your skin care needs without the spa price tag.

At this time of year there is always an uptake in interest in wellness and health and with more awareness than ever before of stress-relieving treatments the UK spa industry is booming.

Thanks to a growing trend among consumers to manage and reduce stress, look good and lose weight the spa industry has become an important contributor to the UK economy with around 800 day, residential, leisure club and hotel spas in the UK.

The latest figures from Mintel also reveal that spas have become much more attractive to a mainstream audience in the UK with more than 35 million Brits a year spending £5.2bn on services and treatments.

What is it about a spa treatment that is so good? Well, apart from the ambient music and care and attention from the staff (hopefully) there is a big focus on results. Spas tend to use pampering products which have been scientifically proven to get results. This means that your facial treatment, anti cellulite program or deep cleanse will use skin care products which have been researched and tested – often called ‘results driven skincare’.

This means the products used in the premier spas will have ingredients such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Polyhydroxy Acids, Bionic Acids, NeoGlucosamine and Peptides. These wild and wonderful sounding ingredients aren’t available in high street products but when you visit a spa and receive a treatment from a trained therapist or dermatologist these are the ingredients which will get your skin fit and create that healthy, relaxed glow.

While it’s great to visit a spa and be spoilt the experience doesn’t come cheap. However, you can re-create the experience at home by using cosmeceutical skin care products. These are available form aesthetic clinics, dermatologists and skin care specialists and contain many of the scientifically proven ingredients your spa therapist will use.

The Exuviance Age Reverse regime, for example, contains a comprehensive set of ingredients for anti ageing and optimum skin health. They are the type of products which you would find in a spa or respectable dermatologists because of the high levels of active ingredients they contain.
